Bold and italic are Unicode look-alike characters, the trick people use because LinkedIn's editor has no formatting. Screen readers cannot read them and LinkedIn's search does not match them, so use them for a word or two, never a paragraph.
Most founders post on LinkedIn for three weeks and then stop. Not because they run out of things to say. Because every post starts from a blank page, and a blank page loses to a full inbox every single
The usual desktop cut: 3 lines or about 210 characters. LinkedIn moves it by device and app version.

What the preview checks
The fold
In the feed, LinkedIn shows roughly the first three lines of a post — about 210 characters on a desktop screen, fewer on a phone — and hides the rest behind “…more”. Everything above that line is read by everyone who scrolls past; everything below it is read only by people who tap. The preview cuts your text at the same point so you can see what the first screen actually says.
The first line
A first line longer than about 80 characters wraps onto a second line on a phone and gets cut mid-thought. The tool warns when yours is over that, because the first line is the only part of the post with a guaranteed audience. Put the claim there and break the line right after it.
The limit
LinkedIn allows 3,000 characters per post. The counter runs against that limit and counts characters the way you would, so a bold word counts once even though it is stored as two code units per letter. Hashtags are counted separately; a handful at the end is plenty.
Bold and italic
LinkedIn's editor has no formatting, so the bold and italic you see in the feed are look-alike characters from Unicode's mathematical alphabet, pasted in. The buttons above do that conversion for the words you select and undo it when you press again. Two things to know before you use them: screen readers cannot read those characters, and LinkedIn's search does not match them. A word or two is fine; a formatted paragraph is unreadable for part of your audience.
Privacy
The page runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to MediaPilot or anyone else, nothing is stored, and there is no account. If you use the button above, the draft is carried into the signup on your own device so you do not have to paste it again.
